BE ALERT WHEN OUT AND ABOUT
- Park in well-lit areas.
- Lock your vehicle, roll up the windows and take your keys with you.
- Do not leave tempting valuables or property visible inside the car. Lock these items in the trunk.
- Avoid shortcuts and dark, isolated areas.
- Don't carry credit cards you don't need, or large amounts of cash.
- If someone makes you uneasy, trust your instincts and leave.
MAKE YOUR HOME SAFE AND SECURE
- Be sure your street address number is large, clear of obstruction, and well-lighted so police and other emergency personnel can find your home quickly.
- Lock your door, even when you intend to return home shortly.
- Light the outside of your home to discourage prowling and loitering.
- Door to door solicitors are required to be licensed in Holland Township, always ask to see their permit.
- Keep emergency numbers by your phone.
GET INVOLVED IN YOUR COMMUNITY
- Report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
WATCH OUT FOR SCAMS
- Don't fall for anything that sounds too good to be true- a free vacation, sweepstakes prizes, high yield investments, etc.
- Never give your social security number, date of birth, bank account information, or credit card information to anyone over the phone.
HOW TO PREVENT IDENTITY THEFT
- Do not give out personal information.
- Report lost or stolen checks.
- Destroy unused financial solicitations ("junk mail").
- Shred your old checks and bills before putting them in the trash.
- Get a copy of your credit report every six months to ensure there aren't any credit cards or checking accounts you did not open.
